Quick answer

The calculators and guides on this website give general information and estimates for UK Capital Gains Tax. They are not tax advice and do not take your full circumstances into account. Tax rules and rates can change. Check any figure that matters against GOV.UK, and speak to HMRC or a qualified tax adviser before you file a return, make a payment or decide to sell.

Key facts

  • General information and estimates only, not personal advice.
  • Results depend on the figures you enter and the rules as we describe them.
  • Rules, rates and allowances can change.
  • Not affiliated with HMRC or any government body.
  • Check with GOV.UK, HMRC or a qualified adviser before you rely on a figure.

General information only

Everything on this website, including the calculators, the worked examples, the tables and the guides, is published for general information. It is written for people in the UK and describes the rules for the tax year shown, which runs from 6 April to 5 April. It is not tax advice, legal advice or financial advice, and it is not a personal recommendation. Your own position may differ in ways we cannot see.

Calculators give estimates

A calculator can only use the figures you enter, and it follows the method set out on our methodology page. If a figure is wrong, if a relief applies that we have not modelled, or if the facts of your case are more complicated than the tool assumes, the result may not match the tax you owe. Rounding can also cause small differences. Treat every result as an estimate and not as a final figure for your tax return.

Rules and rates change

Capital Gains Tax rates, allowances, reliefs and reporting rules can change from year to year, and sometimes within a year. We work to keep our pages current, but we cannot promise that every page reflects the latest rule at the time you read it. The official source is always GOV.UK. If an official page and a page on this site disagree, rely on the official page and let us know through our contact page.

No relationship with HMRC

This website is independent. It is not run by HMRC or any government department, and it is not endorsed by them. Where we link to GOV.UK or HMRC guidance, we do so to help you check the source.

No adviser relationship

Using this website, or emailing us, does not create an adviser and client relationship. We are not able to review your tax return, advise you on whether to sell, or say how a rule applies to your particular facts. If your case involves a large gain, a business, a trust, an inheritance, a divorce, an overseas element or anything unusual, take advice from a qualified tax adviser or accountant.
